I would like to congratulate the 100 businesses from across Europe that have been announced as the finalists and Ruban d’Honneur recipients in the 2013/14 European Business Awards. The finalists were chosen from over 370 National Champions by an esteemed panel of judges made up of European business and political leaders, academics and entrepreneurs. These businesses are shining examples of European business success and I wish them the well in the next and final round.

As the European Business awards reaches its third and most exciting stage it creates the opportunity to review the background and highlights of this year’s programme. Once again the entries reflected the fact that even in an economic environment that is still showing an uneven pattern of recovery the most successful businesses continue to thrive and grow.
And the data which emerges from the entries produces some interesting insights into the European Business community

RSM is the lead sponsor of the European Business Awards, and as the Regional Leader for Europe, I have had the great pleasure and fortune of being the Master of Ceremonies at RSM hosted ‘National Champions’ events across the continent. These special events are to celebrate with those companies who have been awarded National Champion status and who are therefore through to the next round in the competition. In total, this is 371 companies in 31 countries; all of differing size and structure and from across many sectors and industries.

Last Wednesday we launched our new initiative ‘They Could be Giants’; a programme set up to showcase companies at an early stage with the potential to be disruptive their markets. They are an extremely impressive group of innovative, entrepreneurial and highly promising businesses.
The initiative first came about when we spotted companies coming through the awards that had stand out business products or services but could not yet prove financial success. We wanted to help and give visibility to businesses like this.
Additionally we wanted to show Europe and the rest of the world that we have some very innovative early stage businesses with huge potential coming out of a lot of different sectors – which obviously bodes well for the future.
‘They Could be Giants’ was born
